Synopsis:

A study published on February 8th, 2022, in the journal Frontiers in Climate revealed that forest fires in Indonesia contributed 7% of total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, Indonesia was the seventh world emitter of green house gases with 1.24 billion Gt CO2e. According to the records of the Directorate General of Spatial Planning of the Ministry of PUPR, land and forest changes are the largest contributor to Indonesia’s emissions, with 36 percent, followed by peatland fires with 26 percent, and energy with 22 percent. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry recorded a very high forest removal rate of 104 thousand hectares in a year. In 2022, Indonesia’s forests accounted for 96 million ha or 51.2 percent of the total land area, of which 88,3 million ha were within the state forest area. The deforestation is the major contributor to climate change.

As one of the contributions to reduce the impact of climate change, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) together with the Oak Foundation, collaborated with KALEKA, Kemitraan, Kota Kita, PATTIRO, and WRI Indonesia to carry out the Think Climate Indonesia project to carry out effective and useful climate action as an input for policy makers.
